in dreams, a fuZZed fall
March 2018
Taking from accumulated recorded footage and fractions of some 16mm film I contact printed and photogrramed, iN DreamS: a fuZZed faLL is an experimental attempt to utilize the negative space of the black box. Looking at the digital material I have accumulated over the years I worked through this project, not in connection with the content, but substance of tone, duration, light, and movement. Working in thoughts around structural filmmaking, I attempting to re-create spatial (theatrical) structure film in atmosphere, composition, color rhythm, and de-constructing not just in substance of digital, but the screen itself.
Collaging, blending, overlaying, and blurring frames, I de-scaled and destabilized frames in attempts to reconfigure film compositions. Guided by sonic tension, these moving frames surface on the various forms of what destabilizing theatrical film could look or feel like for my larger project. There is a simultaneous move between night footage against dark space as a way to unbind the frame and de-scaling and giving presence to the frame in the space. Working in dark stage feels and compartmentalizing spatiality with collective or vanishing frames. Curving through color as a timeline for momentum, sound as the beating guidance of time with images moving with and through this as a messy mixed dreaming.
